    Joseph bought the Kendall farm, comprising seventy acres, located ih Burlington, about a quarter of a mile from the center of that town, and two miles from the Wilmington line, being on the main road from Boston to Lowell. He removed the old buildings and built the house and barn as shown on the illustration on opposite page. Four generations have lived in this house at one time. He had passed away before this incident occurred; it included his mother (who lived to be 93 years old), her son Samuel, grandson Charles and his sons, Charles S. and George W., the great grandchildren.

On 28 May 1812 when Joseph was 25, he first married Asenath Carter (61181) , daughter of Jonas Carter (51261) (17 Apr 1758-16 Mar 1815) & Phebe Carter (63463) (3 Jun 1760-), in Burlington, MA.124,551 Born ca 1793.615 Asenath died in Burlington, MA on 10 Oct 1817. Buried in Second Parish Burial Ground, Burlington.

Joseph and Asenath were second cousins; his maternal grandfather and her paternal grandfather were brothers.

Children of Joseph and Asenath (Carter) Butters:
    i. Joseph Butters, b. 29 Oct 1814 at Wilmington,399 d. 9 Nov 1869, m. at Carlisle, MA, 29 May 1844 Mary E. Monroe (d. 19 Nov 1894, dau. of Reuben & Rebecca (Clark) Monroe); and
    ii. a daughter, b. 30 Sep 1818, d. 12 Oct 1818, buried in the same coffin as her mother Asenath.

coffin. Here lies a belov'd wife & Child. A solemn warning to Husband Mother brothers and sisters all who are left.

    That she so soon resign'd her breath
    In bloom of life then she must die
    In death's cold urn they now must lie.

On 31 Dec 1818 when Joseph was 32, he second married Sally Gowing (56810) , daughter of Jabez Gowing (49382) (9 Mar 1757-25 Sep 1830) & Sarah Jaques (43380) (11 Mar 1762-20 Sep 1848).209 Born on 15 Oct 1784.209 Sally died on 26 Jul 1863; she was 78.209
